The great writer-director P.T.Anderson struggled to secure funding for this controversial, loosely fictionalised take on the Scientology faith. Hoffman is L. Ron Hubbard-alike Lancaster Dodd, and Phoenix plays a drifter who falls in with Dodd and the cult he heads. Set in the 1950s, ‘The Master’ also features Amy Adams as Dodd’s wife. Early footage points to mesmerising performances. Expect this to be a strong Oscar contender, unless Hollywood’s favourite cult gets to the academy first…
