Lionel Richie emerged from the same Motown roots as Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, who paved the way for him in this Grammy category.

As a solo artist departing from his group, the Commodores, the singer-songwriter made a major impact in 1984, with his second solo album, ‘Can’t Slow Down.’ The project earned him the Album of the Year Grammy in 1985.

Upon its release, the LP peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Album Charts. Every single from the album reached the top 10 of the Hot 100, and his bigger jam, ‘All Night Long (All Night),’ and popular ballad ‘Hello’ stole the top spots.
