After Lionel Richie’s ‘Can’t Slow Down,’ it took nine years for another R&B artist to win the Album of the Year Grammy. Whitney Houston‘s ‘The Bodyguard’ took the crown in 1994.
Whitney was competing in a category full of men — Billy Joel, Sting, R.E.M. and Donald Fagen — but she emerged the leading lady.
The soundtrack to the motion picture, in which she also starred, brought out some of the biggest hits of her career including ‘I Have Nothing,’ ‘I’m Every Woman’ and her cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You.’
She wasn’t the only artist on the ‘The Bodyguard Soundtrack,’ which also featured songs from jazz musician Kenny G and the S.O.U.L. System, among others. However, the lauded songstress remained the star, singing six records on the album, which she co-produced with Clive Davis.
